Metal casting is a process where molten metal is poured into a mold that contains a hollow cavity with a desired geometrical shape. The metal cools, forming a solidified part. Advantages of metal casting include:

Although metal casting services are advantageous, they don’t always create finished products. Items may have a coarse surface finish, which isn’t suitable for mating parts, or dimensions that don’t match drawing requirements. That’s where additional manufacturing comes into play.

One downfall to the casting process is the upfront time and cost that the foundries incur in designing, creating and proving of the patterns needed to produce a casting of a near net shape. Additionally, low volume parts are often times not candidates due to up front costs associated with launching a casting program. Rapid Prototyping is a process of creating quick to market fully functional components, and is necessary when time is critical, while still needing to be mindful of cost and quality. It is ideal for complex parts in low volume. Marberry Machine has partnered with a Robo Casting company, which allows us to produce fully machined castings without the need patterns, utilizing robotic machining of sand forms, to create the pattern directly from a supplied CAD file. Laser scanning to create a model is available if needed to create a CAD file. On one occasion, we were able to supply (5) 600 lbs castings, complete with machining and NDE, in less than 6 weeks from the time the CAD Model was finalized, using the rapid prototyping process. If we had gone the route of conventional castings, we would have been looking at 6 months as opposed to 6 weeks.
